MEQUON, Wis. - Elmhurst wrestlers
Mark Corsello and
Charlie Curran both captured individual titles as the Bluejay wrestling team competed at the Concordia University (Wis.) Open. No team scores were kept at the event.
Charlie Curran was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Curran was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding Wrestler" after captureingthe individual title at 157 pounds with a 5-0 record. Curran breezed through his first two matches with a technical fall and a pin in less than minute. In the quarterfinals he scored a 10-3 win over Wartburg's Matt Vercello. Curran toppled third-ranked Jesse Milks of Wisconsin-Platteville in the semifinals by a 5-2 decision. Curran scored a 5-3 victory over Cade Sarbecker of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the finals.
Mark Corsello captured the individual title at 285 pounds.
Corsello scored the individual title at 285 pounds with a perfect 5-0 record. Corsello, ranked second in the latest NWCA poll, scored a pair of pins en route to the championship round. Facing third-ranked John Helgerson of Wartburg in the finals, Corsello scored a 7-5 tiebreaker victory to earn the individual title.
The Bluejays fared well at 133 pounds with a pair of wrestlers placing among the top-five.
Jake Denhof placed third at 133 pounds after posting a 6-1 record. Denhof opened the tournament with a pair of wins before falling to Wartburg's Sean White in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Denhof posted two straight victories before receiving a pair of medical forfeit victories to place third.
Jake Oster, ranked second in the latest NWCA poll, placed fifth at 133 pounds. Oster started with three straight victories before he had his 32-match winning streak snapped by an 11-5 loss to North Central's John Starzyk in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Oster posted back-to-back victories before falling to North Central's Nathan Fitzenreider in the consolation semifinals. Oster placed fifth after earning a medical forfeit victory over Starzyk.
Jack Lewis added a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds after finishing the tournament with a 5-2 record. He pinned the University of Chicago's Spencer Lewis in 3:28 to capture fifth place.
Mike Grice reached the consolation quarterfinals and posted a 5-2 record at 149 pounds while
Ryan Early also posted a 5-2 record at 149 pounds.
Jon Nelson and
Joe Rau both advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at 197 pounds before being eliminated.
