STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team suffered an 81-73 loss to fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. With the loss, Elmhurst slid to 4-3 on the 2009-10 season.
Leading by only four with 3:30 left in the first half, UW-Stevens Point (8-1) scored the next seven points to open up an 11-point (39-28) lead. The Pointers carried a 39-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Trailing by 13 in the second half, Elmhurst slowly chipped away at the Pointers' lead. A
Matt Bernier 3-pointer brought the Bluejays to within four points (56-52) with eight minutes to play. UW-Stevens Point gradually pushed its lead back up to 12 points and did not allow the Bluejays to close the deficit to six points until the final seconds of the game.
The Pointers finished the contest shooting a whopping 63.6 percent (28-of-44) from the floor. UW-Stevens Point also outrebounded Elmhurst 25-18.
Elmhurst shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor, including 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from downtown.
Mike McCurdy came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points in the loss for Elmhurst. McCurdy shot 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from downtown.
Dustin Bainter added 21 points in the loss, shooting 8-of-10 from the floor. Bainter also totaled five steals.
Zack Boyd added nine points while Bernier scored seven.
UW-Stevens Point was led by Louis Herd's 19 points. Herd shot 9-of-11 from the floor and added five rebounds. Dan Tillema came off the bench to record a double-double, totaling 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jerrel Harris added 13 points while Matt Moses scored nine for the Pointers.
Elmhurst travels to Aurora University on Saturday, December 19.
