LISLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's and women's track and field teams returned to action by running at the Benedictine University Invitational. The men's team placed 12th while the women's team finished in 15th place.
On the men's side, the Bluejays scored 23 points to place 12th out of 20 teams. The Bluejays finished just a third-of-a-point behind Benedictine University (23.33 points). Ripon College placed 10th with 26 points. The University of Chicago won the event with 101 points.
Mark D'Angelo had a strong showing for the Bluejays, placing third in the 400 meters (50.26 seconds) and sixth in the 200 meters (50.26 seconds). Matt D'Angelo finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.54 seconds. Pat Austin placed fourth in the 1,500 meters in 4:04.82. Ken Ptack scored two points for the Bluejays with a seventh place finish in the steeplechase (10:31.51). The Bluejays' 4x100 relay team scored the squad's final points by placing eighth in 44.51 seconds
On the women's side, Elmhurst finished in 15th place with 16 points. The Bluejays finished just four points out of the top-10. Aurora placed 14th with 18 points and Benedictine finished 13th with 18.5 points. Beloit, North Park, and Illinois Institute of Technology all tied for 10th place with 19 points. Wisconsin-Whitewater won the meet with 142.5 points.
Tracy Brtis scored half of the Bluejays' points in the hurdles. Brits placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.34 and added a sixth-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 16.57 seconds.
Michelle Smith scored the remainder of the Bluejays' points by placing second in the steeplechase in 11:48.42.
Both track and field teams run at the CCIW Championships on May 1-2.
