ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 84-73 victory over Simpson College. With the victory, the Bluejays improved to 5-6 overall.
Elmhurst never trailed in the contest as the Bluejays jumped out to an 11-point first half lead. Elmhurst led 38-30 at the break.
Chris Childs hit five 3-pointers in the Bluejays' win.
Simpson (3-8) pulled to within four points to start the second half, but the Bluejays quickly pushed their lead back up to double digits, building a 17-point advantage with eight minutes remaining. Simpson cut the lead down to eight points with four minutes left, but could come no closer as the Bluejays held on for the 84-73 win.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 51.0 percent (25-of-49) from the field, including 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays shot 75.8 percent (25-of-33) from the foul line.
Simpson shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from downtown.
Chris Childs led Elmhurst with 21 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor. Childs shot 5-of-6 from 3-point range and added three assists in the victory.
Zack Boyd added 18 points and a team-leading six rebounds while
Dustin Bainter totaled 15 points.
Joe Acosta totaled nine points and a team-high five assists.
Simpson was led by Tim Dunlavy's 24 points. Elijah Knox added 15 points while Zack Barragan added 11.
Elmhurst opens CCIW play on Wednesday, January 6, by traveling to Millikin University.
