ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped to 14-6 overall and 7-2 in the CCIW following a 72-64 loss to Millikin University.
Elmhurst led 38-30 early in the second half, but foul trouble began to plague the Bluejays.
Megan Ney and
Meghan Merklein both picked up their fourth foul with more than 13 minutes remaining. Trailing by five (44-39) with 12:41 to play, the Big Blue used an 8-0 run to take a 47-44 lead with 11 minutes to play. Millikin (12-8, 6-3 CCIW) pushed its lead up to 10 points with 2:45 to play. The Bluejays cut Millikin's lead in half with a minute to play, but the Big Blue hit all eight of their free throw attempts in the game's final minute to put the game out of reach.
Lyndsie Long moved into third place on Elmhurst's all-time scoring list with her 29-point effort.
Millikin finished the game shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, including 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Big Blue hit 22-of-26 free throw attempts (84.6 percent). Millikin also had a 42-34 rebounding advantage.
Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 36.4 percent (24-of-66), including 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from beyond the arc.
Lyndsie Long moved into third place on Elmhurst's all-time scoring list with 1,669 points after scoring a game-high 29 points in the loss. Ney totaled a double-double, recording 14 points and 10 rebounds while
Kelsey Monroe finished with 10 points and five assists.
Rashida Joiner added six points and five assists for the Bluejays.
Elise Wildman and Julia Robert led the Big Blue with 20 points apiece. Wildman finished the game shooting 7-of-11 from the floor, scoring the bulk of her points in the paint. She added 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Robert poured in 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Cecily Aldridge added 14 points and eight rebounds while Crystal Zeigler added 11 points and five rebounds.
Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 6.
