CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst wrestling team, ranked fourth in the NWCA Division III Preseason Poll, opened the 2012-13 season with a 32-3 dual meet win over the University of Chicago.
The Bluejays won nine of the 10 matches en route to the 29-point win.
Mark Johnson opened the dual with a 1-0 decision over Chicago's Alex Moore at 125 pounds. Ranked first in the nation at 133 pounds,
Dalton Bullard defeated Chicago's William Long 8-5 to give Elmhurst a 6-0 lead.
Ryan Earley gave the Bluejays a 10-0 advantage when he scored a 10-1 major decision over the Maroon's Joe Ellis at 141 pounds.
Chicago's Joeie Ruettiger scored an 8-6 win over Elmhurst's
Jim Spangler at 149 pounds to account for the Maroons' only points of the dual. The Bluejays'
Alex Maynard downed James Layton 6-2 at 157 pounds and
Yousef Al-Ghoul followed with a 6-5 win over Sam Hopkins at 165 pounds. Daniel Threlked put Elmhurst on top 19-3by toppling Steven Franke 7-4 at 174 pounds.
Danny Balderas defeated sixth-ranked Sam Pennisi 6-4 at 184 pounds to give Elmhurst a 22-3 lead.
Mike Benefiel made his Elmhurst debut at 197 pounds by pinning Chicago's Mario Palmisano in 51 seconds.
Jack Lewis closed out the dual with a 14-4 major decision over Jeff Tyburski at 285 pounds.
Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College on Tuesday, November 13.
